WELLFLEET,Mass.--A memorial service was held to honor Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Bernard Webber, 80, who passed away Jan. 24, 2009. As a young Petty Officer, Webber was the coxswain of the CG36500 motor lifeboat that helped rescue 32 crew members from the ill-fated Pendleton tanker that split in half several miles off Chatham on Cape Cod. Webber and three other crewmen aboard the CG36500 braved a raging storm the night of Feb. 19, 1952 to rescue the crew and bring them safely back to shore. The heroic effort of Webber and the crew is recognized as one of the greatest rescues in Coast Guard history. (Video by Petty Officer First Class Matthew Belson)
